Upon hearing of the passing of Glenn Whittington, I was struck with mixed
emotions, extreme sadness and wonderful memories. Glenn valiantly fought cancer
for 17 months until he decided to move on to his heavenly home.
Glenn and I first became acquainted in the San Jacinto Junior High boys’ locker
room in September 1956. As I recall, Glenn was consoling me while recovering
from being forced by Coach Volpe to tackle Eric Moore 1-on-1 during our 8 th
grade football practice. With Glenn’s thoughtful support and encouragement, I
fully recovered.

These are great stories.  Even though I am not personally acquainted with all the names in these GREAT stories, I graduated from MHS in 1961 and am in the process of writing my Midland memories which includes the likes of Glenn Whittington, Jody Black, Knox Nunnally, Charles Dishman, Ross Lynn, Royce Woolard, Bob Speed, Billy Owens, Dickie Dixon, John Daugherty, Lee Weatherly, Roy Herberger, Art Donnelly, J.O., Keith Kaiser, Coaches Robert Todd and Sam Volpe as well as Doc.  Oh yes, can’t forget the many outstanding educators:  Blackerby, Crockett, Cullins, Gilbreath, Mailey (principal), Mashburn, L.Moore, J.Taylor, Schultz and Selbo…..way too many outstanding people to list…..it had to be “in the water”.

With encouragement from Midland friends and family, I will try to capture the impact that growing up in Midland during my teen years has had on my life.

I was born in South Carolina in 1943.  Prior to ending up in Midland, Texas, our family journey took me through Tennessee, Arizona, back to S. Carolina, N. Carolina, Abilene, TX and ultimately Midland in the spring of 1956 where I enrolled the last six weeks of school in the 7th grade at Cowden Jr. High.  The 8th grade, I attended San Jacinto Jr. High where I became friends with Glenn Whittington and Billy Owens. The following year, I attended Alamo Jr. High which was not fully completed when school started.  I recall wooden boards and plywood set up at various locations to keep us out of the mud—good luck with that, we were kids!!  Fond memories of the year in Alamo spending lots of time with Glenn and Billy.  Also, remember Alamo defeated San Jacinto in football that year—what an upset!!
