Upon hearing of the passing of Glenn Whittington, I was struck with mixed
emotions, extreme sadness and wonderful memories. Glenn valiantly fought cancer
for 17 months until he decided to move on to his heavenly home.
Glenn and I first became acquainted in the San Jacinto Junior High boys’ locker
room in September 1956. As I recall, Glenn was consoling me while recovering
from being forced by Coach Volpe to tackle Eric Moore 1-on-1 during our 8 th
grade football practice. With Glenn’s thoughtful support and encouragement, I
fully recovered.
The bond with Glenn grew as we were part of opening a brand new junior high
school in the fall of 1957—Alamo Junior High School with Mr. Emmons moving
from a Science Teacher at San Jacinto to the Principal of our new school.
Our friendship continued to grow as we moved into our high school years at
Midland High. It was during this time that our adventures, involvement in
athletics, experiences and other anctics created a great friendship.
After our graduation from MHS (’61), we pursued different paths—Glenn headed
to TCU and I attended Pasadena Nazarene College in Pasadena, California. For
the next 20 years our communication was very minimal as we both focused on
college, military service, marriage and raising our families. Fortunately, our
friendship was rekindled as a result of our 20-year high school reunion. Following
this event, we maintained consistent communication and exchanged numerous
visits to Texas and California. A highlight for me was Glenn speaking at my
retirement in 2004. Our last person to person visit was in July 2023.
Glenn’s passing is a tremendous loss for all of us. I will never forget his
thoughtfulness, humor, humility, kindness and above all his dedicated friendship.
Glenn’s obituary can be accessed through Legacy.com under Norman Glenn
Whittington.
Rest in Peace my dear friend!!

MHS Class of 1964

I lost track of Glenn after high school and rekindled a friendship at our 2022 reunion. He looked fantastic and we had a really nice visit. If he was sick at that time you couldn’t tell it. Glenn was basketball manager for an excellent team that Ron Peavy played on. It included Ross Lynn, Royce Woolard, Albert Pierce, Knox Nunnally, Charlie Dishman, Warren Lynn, and myself.
Thank you Bob, great memories of you and our times at MHS.
