Sylvia

Written by Dr. Gregory Bartha

Sylvia was a young woman with a 3 year old daughter who reached out to me for assistance. She and the daughter were living in one room in a one floor apartment complex in a slum outside of Mbale. There was no door, only a cloth covering the entrance. Deep ditches with standing water surrounded the building.

Sylvia was struggling to support herself and her daughter. She was growing rice in a small plot of land she was renting and working in a small food store. Her husband had run off to Kampala and had not returned. In Uganda young men frequently leave their family and go to Kampala for work or “high” living. This practice certainly contributes to poverty in the country. I am trying to give Sylvia and her daughter some financial assistance.
