I DECIDED THE BEST SUMMER JOB WAS BEING A LFEGUARD.  SO, I MOSIED ON DOWN TO MIDLAND PARKS AND REC AND BEGGED SCOOTER AULD FOR A JOB.  I HAD NO QUALIFICATIONS AND WAS UNWILLING TO TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER.  HE SAID OK, AND OFFERED ME A JOB AS THE CLEANUP BOY AT HALFF POOL.  IT PAID 69 CENTS AN HOUR, 1.5 HOURS A DAY.  I THINK HE WAS TRYING TO DISCOURAGE ME.  BY THE END OF THE SUMMER I WAS ON THE STAND— MAKING 69 CENTS AN HOUR.

The Police Siren

I remember when the Terminal kids came to Alamo. I met John Mc and Gene Clark. We became fast friends. I went to Terminal all the time to visit them. Many treats  eating John’s Mother’s cooking, taking showers in the high showers with 6 or eight heads, stopping up the drains in the shower. It almost became a swimming pool.  We went into all the tunnels under the runways. It was a great time

Later in high school ( MHS ) the three of us acquired a police siren  ( where we got it will remain with John and me ). We had to put it up against the back tire for it to work .  Gene had a four door Oldsmobile.  Gene would drive, John would lay down in the back seat holding the siren on the tire while held on to his feet to keep him in the car .  We drove in front of MHS and all over Midland, cars pulling over,  everyone in town looking .  It was much more effective at night . That lasted about a week or so. At that point it seems the owner of the siren wanted it back . End of a wonderful week or so.  I wish I had it when I go to Dallas .

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

REMEMBER, REMEMBER, REMEMBER, “Precious memories”

Midland High School was erected in 1928, for a price of $150,000.  Carver High School was established in 1932. A new Midland High School started construction in 1948, and the Class of 1950 was the first to graduate from the new school.  The “CATOICO” student yearbook derived its name from the combination of: Cattle, Oil and Cotton.

Children could sing the Bulldog Fight Song Pre-Kindergarten. Games were broadcast via radio.  Attendance at the games were heels, sportscoat/ ties, cigars and flasks (pinkies), popcorn and cokes.  Friday Night 1949, was a social event.  Wahoo, special trains to Abilene, Chuck Moser’s Mighty Eagles, and Lynn Gregory.  MHS Monday Night “Booster Club Meetings” donuts/cokes for kids, laughed each time Coach Tug Boat ran game films backwards and the players ran backwards.

Fall Season always began on Thursday nights with large crowds for Carver games. The 1961 Carver Team, coached by Johnny Williams, won the State (First State Championship for Midland) and again in 1963.  Carver teams brought speed, excitement and entertainment not seen on Friday nights

Jan Henderson McBee (Class of 1959)

I married my high school sweetheart, Carl Vanover (Class of 1957). Carl and I have 2 beautiful

daughters, Carla Jo and Marla Jan. Carla and Marla have blessed us with 4 grandchildren and 1

great grandchild to be born in October, 2009. ( I know what you are thinking – I am entirely too young

for a great grandchild, you are right). They all live in Big Timber, MT. ( My Son-In-Laws paid my

husband to keep me in Texas and out of their hair, ha ha I think)

My marriage to Carl ended in divorce and I was single for 3 years. Then I married Arlis McBee and

we were married for 33 years. Arlis passed away 2 years ago. After 1 divorce and 1 death, I do not

intend to marry again.

Since leaving Midland, I have lived in Notrees, Tx; Andrews, Tx; Baird, Tx; Jena, La; Big Timber, MT;

Phoenix, Az; and Dumas, Tx. (I think I may have some gypsy blood.)

My parents are deceased and lived in the same house that I grew up in, 3502 Apache Dr, (next door

to the house where the military plane landed after the crash with a private plane in 1956 or 1957).

My brother, Pete Henderson, (Class of 1958), still lives in Midland and his children graduated from

Lee High School and they still live in Midland.

After 20 years I retired from a CPA firm as Office Manager. I no longer dread January thru April 15th.

Now I work as an "On Call" for Edward Jones. ("On Call" is a fancy name for Temp.)

HIGH SCHOOL – Cruising and the Bear Hug

No Particular Place to Go” by Chuck Berry

I can remember the joy of finally getting my drivers license.  I really enjoyed my Cushman Eagle motor scooter, but I was ready to move on to a car.   Several of my friends were a few months older than me, and got cars sooner than I did – so I learned “cruising” early on.   (Think about the movie American Graffiti with Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss etc.   1958 Chevy Impala, 1956 T-Bird, 32 Deuce Coupe.  Driving a certain loop for hours, stopping at the hang outs for cokes and cheeseburgers and french fries.   Seeing all your friends and meeting new ones.)
